"Remote Africa Safaris Staff News May 2010" - 28 May 2010 00:00
Tafika re-opened on May 1st for Remote Africa’s 15th season; and staff have been returning renewed and ready. We thought you might like an update on senior staff and what they have been doing in the off season.
Stephen Banda – wildlife guide & road grader extraordinaire spends his off season farming with his family down at Mfuwe. Stephen had good crops this year and is fortunate not to have to sell now when prices are low. He will store his harvest and sell much later in the year when prices rise. Back at Tafika for the 2010 season, Stephen has graded all our game viewing roads and has been guiding our early season guests.
Alex Phiri’s off season included his first trip outside of Zambia when he went to Tanzania to collect a new game viewing vehicle for Tafika. He was thrilled to see the Indian ocean and Lake Malawi and has been bitten by the travel bug. Alex also studied for his walking guide’s exam. This, the pinnacle of the guiding license, is arguably the most challenging and we are delighted to announce that Alex has passed his last examination and is now a fully qualified walking guide! Eager to get out and about, he has lead several walks this season!
Mukupa Zulu passed his driving guides examination. Mukupa, who lives at Mkasanga village near Tafika has other talents too – he is also the Remote Africa electrician; and when at home, is involved with amateur dramatics putting on plays about anti-poaching and conservation.
Bryan Jackson was in Cape Town – getting re-acquainted with his sofa and the television! In between this demanding schedule he labeled and filed his considerable photographic library as well as attending gym sessions to stay in shape for the new season. He recently returned to Tafika in fine form!
Linda Shenton is also currently at Tafika, on her annual visit home to Zambia from Sweden. She and Bryan flew up from Lusaka to Mfuwe on the same flight and on their drive into camp with Stephen had a great sighting of a magnificent leopard on the road! A terrific start to the season!
After an off season gallivanting around the globe, Heather Mansfield returned to camp at the end of April and as always has everything and everyone running efficiently already! Heather and Linda met up with John and Carol in London in February for the Destinations Travel Show in Earl’s Court, where they met agents and the public (including past guests!).
Rona Leppens – the excellent Remote Africa caterer spent her off season in other parts of the Zambian wilderness and also in Durban. She returned with Heather at the end of April.
We look forward to the return of Isaac Zulu and Cameron Dallas to complete the team.
Opening dates: Tafika: 1st May. Chikoko Tree Camp: 25th May. Crocodile River Camp: 1st June. Mwaleshi Camp (North Luangwa): 15th June.
Contact Heather (tafika@remoteafrica.com) or Linda (reservations@remoteafrica.com) for bookings and enquiries.
